Philanthropy Australia Conference 2010: Philanthropy at the Tipping Point?

Is this the tipping point which will see philanthropy in this country scale unforeseen heights?

6th National Homelessness Conference - Many Ways Home: Towards Ending Homelessness by 2020

Organisation: External site opens in a new windowHomelessness Australia
Location: Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, Brisbane
Cost: $450 - $875

The 6th National Homelessness Conference, Many Ways Home: Ending Homelessness by 2020 is an opportunity to discuss the Government's White Paper - The Road Home. Will we meet the national target or can we do more? How will the White Paper impact on your service? What are other States and Territories doing in relation to their Implementation Plans?

Homelessness Australia will bring together all sectors to answer these questions and more at the 6th National Homelessness Conference in Brisbane from 1-3 September 2010.

In addition to taking the 'big picture' view of where we want to be in 2020 - both in terms of Australia's commitments and our place in the world - through keynotes and plenary discussions, the Conference will also examine how we work on the ground and what new approaches look like in practice.

World Energy Congress, Montreal 2010 (Canada)

Organisation: External site opens in a new windowWorld Energy Congress
Location: Montreal, Canada

Responding Now to Global Challenges - Energy in transition for a living planet

The World Energy Council organizes a world congress every three years. This congress, the premier international multi-energy forum with exhibitors from the field, is an opportunity for participants to better understand energy issues and solutions from a global perspective. It brings together more than 2,500 top world leaders in the field of energy, coming from industry, governments, and international organizations, as well as the media, universities and energy industry associations.

The theme for WEC Montreal 2010 reflects the undeniable sense of urgency that faces the world's energy sector. More energy is needed from now until 2020, with prices rising significantly, while world energy demand is expected to double by 2050. One third of the world population does not yet benefit from reliable energy supply. The energy industry is faced with overwhelming environmental, social and political acceptability. In short, the situation is more challenging than ever.

With this situation in mind, the World Energy Council has set its 2008-2010 business goals & objectives accordingly : work toward responsible growth that reconciles economic development, environmental protection, and the reduction of global inequalities.

Australia's Place in the World: A Public Lecture with Dr Michael Wesley, Executive Director, Lowy Institute for International Policy.

Australia's place in the world is less controversial today than it was 20 years ago. But our complacency about our role in the world is quietly being undercut by important changes in Australians' sense of themselves and the tectonic shifts of the world around us. Dr Michael Wesley draws on opinion polling data, trade and investment flows and geostrategic trends to argue that Australia is about to embark on a new phase of debate about its place in the world. He sketches out the contours of this emerging debate and why it is so important to our national future.

Dr Michael Wesley is the Executive Director of the Lowy Institute for International Policy. Previously he was Professor of International Relations and Director of the Griffith Asia Institute at Griffith University, and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Hong Kong and Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China. Prior to this, he was the Assistant Director-General for Transnational Issues at the Office of National Assessments.

Inaugural National Indigenous Policy and Dialogue Conference

Organisation: External site opens in a new windowUniversity of NSW - Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences and the Social Policy Research Centre
Location: University of New South Wales

Indigenous Policy and Dialogue: New Relationships, New Possibilities

Australia's colonial history has left us a challenging legacy, where contrasting worldviews continue to frame struggle and contestation between Indigenous people and the state.

Our philosophical and institutional frameworks are not suited to dealing with this legacy, and Indigenous policy remains problematic and contentious. As a consequence there is no process for reflection or re-examination of the relationship between Indigenous people and the Australian nation.

What might we now do to create a more just and reconciled society? How might we create new opportunities to transform the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people? What are the implications for policy making in this contested space?

The conference will be the first to be hosted by the recently established Indigenous Policy and Dialogue Research Unit (IPDRU) in the Social Policy Research Centre at UNSW. IPDRU, headed by Patrick Dodson as founding director and Professor of Indigenous Policy, is engaged in a nation building research agenda, developing new narratives, institutions, practices, philosophies and opportunities for a more just and inclusive Australia, where Indigenous rights and interests are at the centre of Australian nationhood and embedded in the institutional fabric of the country.

Australian Population Association 15th Biennial Conference

Organisation: External site opens in a new windowAustralian Population Association (APA)
Location: Gold Coast, Queensland
Cost: $280 - $760 per attendee

Population growth and demographic change are certainly hot topics of the moment. The recent release of the 3rd Intergenerational Report stimulated widespread interest, particularly the prospect of Australia's population reaching 35.9 million by 2050. IGR3 re-focused policy makers' attention on the ageing of the population and how the costs of this significant change can be borne by Government.

Notwithstanding the potentially substantial budget impacts, projected changes to Australia's age structure have a range of implications. This is the theme of the Australian Population Association's 2010 national conference - the impacts of generational change.

Here is your opportunity to contribute to the debate. Should Australia continue to allow a large overseas migrant intake and what are the consequences? Will current high fertility levels continue into the future? Can we overcome potential impacts on living standards by working harder and smarter?

Join Australia's principal demographic thinkers as we consider these vital questions. Add your voice - and particularly the results of your research - to the debate. Hear the views and form your own opinion - our future depends on it.
