- Charities are channelling Angelina Jolie more than Mary MacKillop these days. Philanthropy Australia points out that the "less sexy" charities have to compete against the "more sexy" charities. There are dozens of breast cancer charities, to pick an obvious example, replete with celebrities and photogenic people and the word "breasts". What's a bowel cancer organisation to do?

- Volunteers step in as the call to alms proves tricky

- Charities nationally are reporting a decline in corporate donations since the global financial crisis, but are finding voluntary work is on the rise. Financial analyst and Philanthropy Australia Council member Paul Clitheroe said companies were increasingly aware of cutting costs and rationalising staff, while balancing pressures to be responsible corporate citizens and give back to the community.
