Bolder Philanthropy Award

The Bolder Philanthropy Award is a new category in the Australian Philanthropy Awards Program. It recognises the unique ‘risk capital’ role that philanthropy plays in investing in start-ups and giving early-stage support to design and test solutions which can be scaled, replicated and evolved over time to support continued positive change.

Nominations will be assessed on the below criteria:

  1. How this grant-maker used philanthropy as social risk capital to initiate or test a new proposition, or how it provided early-stage support for a solution to a problem which was then (through whatever means) taken to scale, replicated or mainstreamed. (E.g. this might include philanthropy funding and piloting a new model, approach, knowledge, policy, product, technology, service, enterprise etc.)
  2. How the intervention, initiative or solution (enabled by the grant-maker) has since been scaled, replicated or evolved to deliver sustained positive change.
  3. The additional non-financial role of the grant-maker to contribute to this initiative's success (e.g. convening, leveraging, influencing, advocating)
  4. Specify three things that make this a knockout nomination.

This Award is for activity occurring in the last 10 years (2009-2019) – this may include design, funding, outcomes and/or impact.  The extended timeframe for this award (only) specifically acknowledges the longer-term approach that must be taken to launch an initiative seen as a ‘first of its kind’, as well as the time to replicate, scale and measure and assess its impact and achievements.

The Bolder Philanthropy Award is awarded to organisations that have demonstrated best use of social risk capital philanthropy.

The Australian Philanthropy Awards are open to all members of the Australian philanthropic and broader social change community. You can nominate your own organisation.

The Bolder Philanthropy Award is presented in partnership with JM Philanthropy's Grant Toolbox.
