Geelong Community Foundation’s Philanthropy 500 Program (P500) provides a solution of how and where to start your philanthropic journey. The Foundation believes more people would be philanthropic given the inspiration to participate. This circle of giving engages younger generations and other like-minded donors provide a mechanism to pool their gifts and experience first-hand the powerful impact of collective giving.
By providing an accessible entry-level for family giving, P500 is also an opportunity to build children and young people’s awareness of philanthropy and the power of giving.
“Know where your money is going and be a part of the grant-making process.”
P500 aims to highlight unmet needs in our community, to increase involvement in philanthropy across the Geelong region and support life-changing community programs. Our strategy is to make one primary grant each year and to grow an endowment fund collectively.
Events are held for P500 donors throughout the year that provides education on their chosen impact area, offer networking opportunities, celebrating shortlisted grantees and selecting the final grant recipient.
In 2017, 90 people gifted $500 which was pooled to make a $22,500 grant to a local community organisation via an application and the other $22,500 to establish the P500 endowment fund. The grant recipient was chosen by P500 donor vote at a special event in November.
The P500 endowment fund will provide a lasting gift to our community with the interest from the investment of the fund adding to future P500 grants. The endowment fund is part of the Foundation’s existing $26 million corpus from which income is derived for its annual grant program.
In 2018, 150 donors contributed a $500 donation which was pooled to provide a $40,000 grant to Good Cycles through a vote of the P500 Donors. $37,500 was also added to the P500 Sub Fund. The Grant to Good Cycles was $37,500 plus the $2,500 interest from the P500 endowment fund.
A $500 or more donation secures your annual place in P500. Donate $500 today, $100 monthly for five months or $42 per month ongoing to make a lasting positive impact on the Geelong community.
