The Channel Giving Circle is growing the pot of gold under the rainbow, and changing the way Australians experience gender and sexuality for the better.
The Channel is a Giving Circle. Members join, make a monthly or annual donation, learn about challenges and opportunities faced by LGBTIQA+ communities, vote on community projects they want to support with grants from the pooled donations, and see the positive social change they have achieved collectively.
Currently, the Australian philanthropy sector collectively generates $80 billion in grants for community groups every year. However, only the tiniest fraction of these grants are explicitly given to LGBTIQA+ projects (0.26% on average during 2013-2018). This figure is a long way from equitably representing the 11% of Australians (or 2.7 million people) that identify as being of diverse sexuality. The Channel is trying to transform this picture.
The Channel is Australia's first and fastest-growing giving circle focused on advancing rainbow (LGBTQIA+) causes. Since their establishment in 2016, they have distributed more than $150,000 in grants to LGBTIQ+ community projects across Australia; supported more than 50 LGBTIQA+ community organisations; released the first-ever Australian report on the state of LGBTIQA+ funding; and grown donor membership to over 100+ members spread across five states and three countries.
In April 2019, The Channel initiated ‘giveOUTday’ in Australia (based on the success of the US campaign), raising $82,500 for more than 40 LGBTIQA+ community organisations and in addition, awarding two $5,000 grants to Out for Australia and The Equality Project.
Anyone can join The Channel, with Membership starting at just $25 per month. Our members enjoy exclusive voting rights in our Grant Rounds and provide much-needed support to rainbow projects benefiting the community. 100% of the money donated by our members goes directly to our grants. (Our operational costs are covered through separate fundraising activities.)
We have two memberships available: The Hampton Membership and The Haring Membership; donations made via the Haring Membership are tax-deductible. Visit the links to donate through our secure online payment form with a Visa, Mastercard or AMEX.
