Philanthropy and Partnerships Specialist

Position Description

  • Position Type: Full-time (part-time considered)
  • Salary: $90-$100k base salary plus super and access to salary packaging benefits


About the role 

This role is critical in ensuring the continued growth of AAA’s high-value fundraising program by working closely with philanthropists to meet the organisations fundraising goals and secure both unrestricted and project-specific funding. There will be a specific focus on securing funds for ActionAid’s advocacy and campaigning work in Australia, which focuses on achieving economic and climate justice for women. This work seeks to build a movement of Australians to amplify the demands of women on the frontlines of injustice through campaigns targeting Australian government policy and corporate practice. The role is responsible for managing the development and nurturing of relationships with high value donors and philanthropic foundations who can give donations greater than $10,000. This role will actively identify, research and classify new philanthropic partners, building a pipeline of prospects that align with ActionAid’s values. It will work consistently and proactively to convert these to strategic partnerships that contribute funding towards our programs and campaigns. This will involve cultivating and managing relationships with Australian-headquartered corporate and philanthropic partners in order to secure financial support as well as working with colleagues in the ActionAid federatioto identify global foundations with an interest in our systems change work. The aim of this role is to develop long-term, transformative and impactful partnerships that help us to achieve strategic goals across fundraising, advocacy and brand profile.

Key objectives of the role are:

  • Lead the development of proposals and pitches for ActionAid’s campaigning work in Australia
  • Build the philanthropic prospect pipeline and cultivate new relationships working with relevant colleagues
  • Secure $250K to resource our campaigning work

Roles and responsibilities 

Donor Relationships

  • Manage and build a portfolio of major donors and prospective donors ensuring regular face-to-face meetings, ask meetings, delivery of pitches and updates on ActionAid’s work globally and in Australia.
  • Maintain and develop individual cultivation strategies for each donor in the portfolio, moving donors along the ‘prospect pipeline’ and making sure that donors are not stuck at the cultivation stage.
  • Solicit gifts at face-to-face meetings, involving senior colleagues or peer to peer volunteers where appropriate.
  • Some key relationships may be managed by other staff members, such as the Head of Fundraising or Executive Director, but the Philanthropy &
  • Partnerships Specialist provides strategic and administrative support for these relationships.
  • Identify the most effective opportunities to identify and cultivate major donor prospects, including by seeking advice and involvement of
  • donors, Board members and other networks
  • Research and screen potential corporate and organisational partners to ensure alignment with ActionAid’s values.
  • Proactively source and attend appropriate networking events to build a contact base to increase the target and prospective donor base.
  • Work closely with the programs and campaigns team to ensure the delivery of timely narrative and financial reports for donors that clearly identify project outcomes and meet the donors’ reporting requirements.

Proposal Development

  • Work with ActionAid’s Australia and international staff to identify the areas of ActionAid’s work that are the highest priority for funding.
  • Work closely with the Campaigns and Programs Team to develop compelling and persuasive funding proposals that are highly targeted to individual donor’s interests.
  • Ensure that project proposals adhere to the ACFID Code of Conduct and other internal ActionAid standards.

Operational Management

  • Lead on the day-to-day relationship management of a set of AAA’s fundraising partnerships with philanthropists, including pitch and proposal development, preparation of partnership agreements and development of tailored supporter journeys
  • Create and manage event opportunities working alongside the Philanthropy and Partnerships Manager and other AAA staff including guestlist development, invite design and distribution, event design.
  • Maintain up to date records of all communications with partners using Raisers Edge database and other communication platforms, in line with data protection legislation and to ensure that donor relationships are well managed and coordinated.
  • Keep ActionAid’s global Contract Management System database and other federation platforms up to date with required corporate and philanthropic partnership information.

Budget planning and reporting

  • Working with relevant colleagues in Australia and in-country partners to prepare proposals and budgets.
  • Prepare timely impact reports for philanthropic partners in accordanc ewith reporting requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date income tracking, coding and forecasts, working with the Philanthropy & Partnerships Manager as well as the Data
  • Analyst and Finance Department to identify and address variances as needed.

Skills required

Essential

  • A commitment to ActionAid’s mission and values, including advancingwomen’s rights.
  • Demonstrated experience of securing six-figure+ corporate-charity partnerships
  • Understanding of good practices within philanthropic partnerships, ideally within an international development or advocacy context
  • Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining strategic partnerships
  • Proactive problem solver who is entrepreneurial, ambitious and target driven and able to create innovative partnership opportunities
  • Self-driven with the ability to work co-operatively and flexibly with others, both within and outside the organisation, demonstrating an understanding of effective team working and partnerships
  • Experience of successfully building relationships with donors, especially those at a senior level in the business world
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including ability to pitch with confidence and write compelling proposals and donor reports
  • Excellent external networking, relationship building and influencing skills.

Desirable

  • Experience in partnership development within the international development and/or advocacy work
  • Awareness of global sustainability trends and how ActionAid and/or corporate partnerships can respond to these in our engagement approach.
  • Experience of brand and cause-related marketing partnerships.
  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge or similar fundraising database considered an asset.
