Women’s Community Shelters

Women’s Community Shelters has a unique community-focused approach to solving the crisis of women’s homelessness and domestic and family violence in Australia. We have worked with local communities to bring nine crisis shelters in life: in Manly, Hornsby, Penrith, Parramatta, Forster-Tuncurry, Botany, Revesby, Camden and Castle Hill. This model is unique to Australia’s homelessness and domestic and family violence sector, as almost all other Shelters are solely Government funded.

WCS has created partnerships to establish 25 transitional housing properties, three of which are large-scale properties to provide housing and support to women aged 55+, the fastest growing group of homeless people in Australia.

With a 10-year track record of success, we have communities across Australia seeking our help. We are currently undertaking a feasibility study for Victorian expansion.

Our long-term mission is to no longer be required. With federal, state and local governments working together, in partnership with philanthropists, businesses and local communities, there is a path towards creating the systemic change required within one generation. However, this will only be possible when women and their children experiencing homelessness and domestic violence have access to safe, secure, affordable and permanent housing, with high-quality wrap-around support services.

“Being here has made me realise that I have come from no security, no support, isolation and loneliness, to a place of security, total support – professional support. I am being fed, I am being clothed, I am being cradled. It is time now for me to reflect and to work hard on issues. I am more self-assured and confident. I can stand up and face the world.” WCS 2023 crisis shelter resident
