Starting the year with purpose, connection and generosity: A note from CEO Maree Sidey
As we share the first edition of Giving News for 2026, it feels a little late to say Happy New Year. Yet the sense of renewal that comes with a new year remains important.
Many communities have experienced a difficult beginning to the year. Recent weeks have brought moments of grief and disruption, including violent incidents affecting Jewish and Aboriginal communities, and early bushfires and sudden flooding across the country.
These events highlight both the pressures communities are carrying and the remarkable acts of care, courage and solidarity that continue to emerge in challenging times.
The generosity, energy and commitment that defines our community has shone through in response. This early momentum is a reminder of the important work ahead and the collective impact we can create together.
In this context, the role of philanthropy in social cohesion feels especially vital.
2026 marks an important chapter for Philanthropy Australia. In addition to celebrating our 50th year, we will also launch Strategy 2033 in March. This is a strategy shaped through deep engagement with members across the country and will steer our course for the next six years. I look forward to engaging with all members across the country on this.
In September, we will gather the sector at the 2026 Philanthropy Australia Conference in Brisbane. This will be an important moment to learn, reflect and mobilise around our shared ambition for a more generous, just and sustainable future.
Look out for more details about conference in the next edition of Giving News, including Expressions of interest for the Conference Program and Early Bird registrations for members.
As always, the Philanthropy Australia team is here to support you throughout the year. Our local membership teams can help you connect, learn and explore collaborations. And, of course, keep an eye out every fortnight for Giving News, with insights from across the sector.
Thank you for your leadership and generosity you bring to this community. I look forward to connecting with many of you throughout 2026.
