Inspiring adviser-philanthropist relationship member event

On 14 May, Philanthropy Australia’s WA team, Dylan Smith and Yean Ng hosted a special event about a long-term professional relationship between a financial adviser and their philanthropist client.

"Phoebe spoke openly about how her parents involved her along with her sister Caris, in their family foundation. As teenagers the sisters were informed about granting decisions. Approximately 15 years later, having established respective careers, Phoebe and Caris are now Board members of the foundation, with Phoebe playing the role as Chair.

Throughout this process Adam played the role of adviser, and independent director and was able to assist with the establishment at the beginning and more recently, with the succession planning as Phoebe stepped into the role of Chair. Having a trusted, long-term adviser helped the McClement family have strong continuity with their giving and a timely handing over to the next generation." – Dylan Smith

Quick tip: ‘It’s not your job to jump into solution mode.’

The role of the adviser is to guide the conversation about giving with their client.

Hear Craig Connelly (Partner, Social Investment Advisory at Perpetual and former CEO of the Ian Potter Foundation) recount his experience talking to inter-generational families about their giving in the video, How to support your client (~14min) on the Better Giving Hub (for PA members).

"You may want to gather other trusted advisers externally or within your firm that offer services that help you with different aspects of setting up and managing a structured giving vehicle."
