Sector leaders among 103 ‘bold change-makers’ to receive Churchill Fellowships

A number of friends and colleagues of Philanthropy Australia have received 2024 Churchill Fellowships to do a study tour overseas. They include Erin Dolan, from the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation, Bernadette Black AM, CEO of Seed Futures, who spoke at the 2023 Philanthropy Meets Parliament Summit in Canberra and Em Scott, CEO of GiveOUT. Here, Erin and Bernadette share more on their study plans and how they hope the research will feed into their work across the sector.

‘No red tape, no walls, just the best outcomes’ for First Nations enterprises: the story of Ngarrimili

Anybody who has ever set up a business can tell you how hard it is, let alone the ongoing running and growth of a company. The paperwork, accounting, legal, staff management, tax management and other demands are remorseless. Now add to that the experiences faced by First Nations people, from the harm and hurt of colonisation and impact of the Stolen Generation, ongoing racism and discrimination. Video: Inspiring Story – The Forktree Project 

The Forktree Project’s goal is to return a degraded 133-acre former pastoral property in South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula back to nature. The Project involves re-establishing tens of thousands of native trees and shrubs on the property to bring back native animals, insects and birds as well as sequestering tens of thousands of tonnes of carbon. This is another in the series of South Australian videos produced for the Philanthropy Australia Conference.

Help improve grant practices

Take part in a short survey to help improve grant practices. Sarah Rank, a PhD candidate at The University of Queensland, is researching how different grant-making approaches affect funding outcomes and grantees' experiences as social change makers. Her work aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for reforming funding mechanisms. Grant makers worldwide are invited to complete a brief, anonymous 5-minute survey, open to various organisations, including PAFs, PuAFs, corporate entities, Donor Advised Funds, and individual philanthropists.

Take part in AIIW’s benchmark survey on giving to women and girls

The annual State of Gender-wise Giving survey is now open and Australians Investing in Women (AIIW) invites Australia’s ‘AFR Top 50’ corporate and philanthropic organisations to take part. The survey aims to captures the philanthropic investment in women and girls and provide a national snapshot of how the nation’s largest givers think about gender equity when making philanthropic investment decisions. This is the only survey of its kind in Australia and it provides an important benchmark. This online survey has been produced in partnership with The Evolved Group and  leverages research by John McLeod, JBWere Philanthropic Services and Jarrod Miles, Strive Philanthropy and GivingLarge.

The City of Melbourne's Social Enterprise Grants are a stream of the Small Business Grants program and supports new and existing enterprises with a distinctly social purpose, with up to $25,000 per application.

NAB Foundation Community Grants

The NAB Foundation Community Grants program provides funding of up to $25,000 for local projects that help communities withstand and recover from natural disasters.It awards $1.2 million in Community Grants each year across two grant rounds, including $200,000 available in Impact Grants for projects with big potential. These Impact Grants provide a further $25,000 to recipients to maximise the impact they have on their communities.

 

Submissions close midnight 30 September 2024 (AEST).

FFV Community Grants

The Freemasons Foundation Victoria’s Community Grants focus on partnering and investing in local programs and initiatives that have an enduring impact in our community. Eligible organisations are invited to apply for funding between $5,000 and $50,000 for Victoria based programs that align with our funding areas.

 

Applications close midnight 30 September 2024.

2025 Community Events Grant Program

Not-for-profit organisations are eligible to apply for up to $15,000 under the National Australia Day Council’s Australia Day 2025 Community Events Grant Program. Previous grant-funded events have included Welcomes to Country, citizenship ceremonies, morning teas, mornings of mourning, BBQs, live performances and storytelling with local Indigenous communities. 

 

Grants open Monday 16 September, and close Friday 11 October.
