Philanthropy Australia is planning a New Gen Study Tour to New York immediately prior to the NEXUS Global Summit in June 2023. Associate Engagement Manager for NSW and ACT Bella Conynham (who leads the New Gen Network) tells Philanthropy Weekly why it’s such a unique opportunity for participants ahead of our last call for expressions of interest.

  1. What is the study tour and why is it important?

The New Gen Study Tour is an inspiring and immersive program held between 19-21 June in New York. It’s a unique opportunity for New Gens to connect and learn from global pioneers at the vanguard of private giving, impact investment, innovation and social entrepreneurship.

The tour will give participants an unforgettable first-hand experience of international best practice, accelerate individuals’ leadership journeys and strengthen Australia’s new gen participation in the global philanthropy community. Participants can expect to learn from leading foundations, impact investors and thought leaders. They will also broaden their international network and gain the tools to mature their approach to philanthropy, while creating life-long bonds with fellow participants.

Opportunities like this are few and far between in Australasia, so we’re very excited to be inviting people to submit EOIs for this tour.

  1. What sorts of experiences will the participants have?

Learning themes will include effective intergenerational philanthropy, collaboration and co-design, shared value and social enterprise/innovation, impact investing and blended finance, data and performance measurement, leveraging technology and digitisation.

Previous study tours led by Philanthropy Australia have included field trips, roundtables and facilitated sessions with leading individuals and pioneers such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Social Ventures Partners, Skoll Foundation, Stanford Center on Philanthropy & Civil Society, William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, Omidyar Network, RSF Social Finance, to name a few.

  1. Why has Philanthropy Australia chosen New York and the NEXUS Global Summit for this trip?

New York is the perfect environment to immerse participants into the dynamic world of philanthropy and impact. The likes of long-established organisations such as the Rockerfeller Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies being headquartered there makes hosting a tour in the Big Apple a no-brainer.

The proximity to the NEXUS Summit gives participants an incredible opportunity to connect with a large global network of new gen movers and shakers in the philanthropy and impact arenas also attending the meeting. The summit program is yet to be announced but is expected to be a phenomenal conference delving into topics such as climate change, impact investing, mental health, future of food, family business, innovative philanthropy, web3 and blockchain, refugee solutions, justice and equality, biohacking/wellness, women and girls, tech for good and more.

  1. How will Philanthropy Australia support the participants?

Philanthropy Australia is well placed to facilitate the meetings and engagements taking place on the study tour because of our experience in leading more than 5 tours of this kind since 2013.

We are committed to ensuring participants get the most out of the trip. Our tour leaders will provide detailed daily plans on tour plus session summaries to all participants to ensure key takeaways from engagements are captured. Participants will also be able to share their experiences and reflections with other members afterwards.

  1. How much does it cost and how do people register?

The tour costs approximately AUD$2,750 per person. Costs will be finalised based on participant numbers from EOIs submitted. Costs cover the 3-day program of fully facilitated roundtables, transfers between meetings, field trips and networking dinners.

Costs don’t cover accommodation, airfares and travel insurance (we will share recommendations for hotels and flight itineraries). Participants are also asked to allow for other on-the-ground costs such as breakfasts and lunches. NEXUS Summit tickets are not included within this cost and attendance of the NEXUS Summit is entirely optional.

We warmly invite you to submit an Expression of Interest for the study tour to allow us to determine plans and costs. Please complete this form by Monday 27 March 2023. Please only submit an EOI if you have a genuine intention to attend the study tour. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected]
