B.I.G CHANGE grant supports important causes for Indigenous Australians

May 06th, 2022

Last year, the Barlow Impact Group decided make a strategic philanthropic focus on larger grants with maximum impact. The keystone of the new approach is a single $1,000,000 B.I.G. CHANGE grant.

The recipient of this funding has recently been revealed as From The Heart. From the Heart is the inspirational and urgent campaign for the constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through a Voice to Parliament. From the Heart’s Director, Dean Parkin is an inspiring leader who is passionate about the ‘The Uluru Statement from the Heart’ and focused on achieving a successful referendum on an Indigenous Voice to parliament in the next term. The advisors to ‘From The Heart’ are Noel Pearson, Tanya Hosch, Karen Mundine, Tyronne Garstone, Semara Jose, Thomas Mayor, Mark Textor and Danny Gilbert AM.

A selection panel consisting of Former Philanthropy Australia CEO, Sarah Davies, Rev. Tim Costello AO, Daniel Madhaven and Kate Kennedy were tasked with the job of interviewing and assessing the finalists to assist CEO, Deborah Barlow in making a final decision. Their aim was to find a true change maker who is working to change systems currently keeping people in disadvantage.

“We know that nothing is working to close the gap between the experiences of indigenous Australians and non-indigenous Australians. It is time for a new approach. The Uluru Statement From The Heart enshrined in the constitution is that approach," Deborah Barlow, CEO, Barlow Impact Group said.

The standard of applications was so extraordinary that two further grants of $100,000 each have also been allocated; One to Hagar who supports survivors of slavery, trafficking and abuse in Cambodia, and the other to Menzies School of Health Research providing targeted funding support into health pathways to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth from regional and remote Northern Australia.
