Global platform launches to unleash the potential of data in philanthropy

In an era when data permeates every aspect of our lives, its transformative potential remains untapped in many sectors, particularly philanthropy. The ability to leverage innovative data-driven tools and methods could transform how our organisations – big or small – prioritise investments, tackle root causes and understand more deeply the communities they aim to serve. Recognising this, The GovLab and the Paul Ramsay Foundation joined forces to create the global platform DATA4Philanthropy.net. Stefaan G. Verhulst, Co-Founder and Chief R&D at The GovLab, explains its benefit to the sector.

Introducing the Mother Earth loan - a finance model for agribusiness that cares for Country

The Mother Earth loan is designed to support the purchase of freehold title farmlands by First Nations farmers to revive traditional practices. It’s based on similar modelling to HECS, where repayments are due when Mother Earth is ‘healthy and able to share’ and payments are paused or significantly reduced when ‘Mother is struggling and needs time to heal’. Paul Girrawah House, one of the founders of the Waluwin Foundation, explains how it can work, its benefits and the role philanthropy can play.

Australian International Development Network calls for EOI on Tanzania and Kenya Insight tour

Jointly hosted by AIDN and The Life You Can Save, the Insight Tour will build off the success of AIDN's Rwanda and Uganda trip last year. The tour will give funders an in-depth understanding of the work of a diverse variety of NGOs working in East Africa, with a particular focus on locally led organisations. Participants will meet inspiring founders and innovative organisations in their local operating context, as well as a unique group of fellow funders operating in this space.

Grace Forrest wins prestigious US award for anti-slavery advocacy

Human rights advocate Grace Forrest is the first Australian woman to win one of the prestigious Roosevelt Institute Four Freedoms awards, receiving the 2024 Freedom from Fear accolade. Grace founded Walk Free, under the auspices of the Minderoo Foundation, which produces the Global Slavery Index, the world's most comprehensive dataset on the issue. Grace is the daughter of Andrew and Nicola Forrest and joins the likes of high-profile advocates honoured with the awards previously, including Malala Yousafzai, Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Larma and former German chancellor Angela Merkel.

ACF Boost applications open

ACF Boost is a matched funding program for independent artists and small organisations via the Australian Cultural Fund. Participants will receive $1,000 up-front to support their fundraising activity, then a dollar-for-dollar matched funding boost of up to $5,000.

Mannifera grants open to support work that combats spread of disinformation

Mannifera is a collective of Australian funders working together to invest in civil society organisations advocating for the systems change to strengthen our democracy. Mannifera is launching a request for proposals from organisations working to combat the spread of disinformation and misinformation in Australia. 

Deadline is 22 February 2024.

RACQ Foundation Community Grant Program

RACQ Foundation helps Queensland community groups, charities, organisations, First Nations Councils and clubs impacted by natural disasters. This includes both recovery grants and resilience-based project grants which may relate to physical, nature-based and social solutions.

VFFF Backing the Future QLD grant round

VFFF is excited to open applications for their QLD Backing the Future grant round, awarding one-off, $50,000 grants to 10 individuals or groups of individuals who are working to support young people in rural and regional QLD. Over the course of 12 months, grant recipients will research, develop and/or accelerate an early-stage idea aligned to one of VFFF's four focus areas: Caring for the Environment, Contributing to Society, Decent Work or Exploring Christian Faith and Values.

Manningham Community Fund applications open

The Manningham Community Fund supports and distributes funds to community organisations in Manningham. It operates under the umbrella of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation. The Manningham Community Fund will accept applications for grants up to the maximum value of $10,000. Activities must be based in the City of Manningham.
