Welcome back to Philanthropy Weekly - 2024 promises to be an exciting year. In April, we will host the Australian Philanthropy Awards, recognising extraordinary achievements in contemporary philanthropy. The final Productivity Commission recommendations will be released in May and our August conference in Adelaide – For the Love of Humanity: Impact with Humility – will be one to remember. We also have great content lined up in our newsletter and new segments to look out for, such as practical guides and spotlights on the activities of new and established members. 

 

 

Philanthropy Australia CEO Jack Heath awarded an AM

Jack Heath says he's humbled to be among those to receive an Australia Day Honours this year. Altogether 1,042 people were recognised, with more women than men being included. Amanda Miller OAM and Lisa George, Co-Chairs of Philanthropy Australia, congratulated Jack on behalf of the board and staff.

Innovative corporate philanthropy fosters the joy of giving at work

Independent wealth management firm Koda Capital has launched its own company foundation that empowers employees to become philanthropists in their own right. The Koda Endowment creates an appealing option for staff to structure their giving, building up their philanthropic capital via their salary in a similar manner to how they build up their superannuation - creating a lasting legacy for themselves and the community. PA members leading the charge on the double giving agenda

With submissions on the draft Productivity Commission (PC) report due next Friday, 9 February, a strong response from the philanthropic sector will be important to securing the best possible outcomes for the double giving agenda, writes our Executive Director, Policy, Government Relations and Research, Sam Rosevear.  He reflects on a tremendous week of PA member engagement and information sessions attended by well over 100 people, where there was lively and constructive feedback on PA’s submission to the PC.

How impact investment can make a difference in global health equity

Impact investing is playing a growing role in the development of medicines to treat ‘neglected diseases’ affecting the world’s poorest and most underserved peoples. These medicines would not otherwise be developed by the pharmaceutical industry, which is primarily driven by financial returns. Mark Sullivan AO, founder and managing director of Medicines Development for Global Health, an Australian biopharmaceutical NFP, tells how this finance model is supporting the development of Moxidectin – a potential gamechanger for the WHO’s roadmap to ending river blindness by 2030.

The Australian Philanthropy Awards 2024 are set to recognise extraordinary achievements in contemporary philanthropy. People and organisations from across Australia can nominate and be nominated – they don’t have to be a member of Philanthropy Australia. 'We've received some fantastic entries so far for the awards. It's exciting to see the incredible work being recognised in the sector despite these challenging times. Don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity to shine a light on good practice in creating positive change in our society,' says Renata Zanetti, Philanthropy Australia's Director of Learning and Content. Mannifera grants open to support work that combats spread of disinformation

Mannifera is a collective of Australian funders working together to invest in civil society organisations advocating for the systems change to strengthen our democracy. Mannifera is launching a request for proposals from organisations working to combat the spread of disinformation and misinformation in Australia. Mannifera is aiming to deliver a total of $200,000 to bolster work in these areas, supporting a number of organisations with one-year grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000, with the potential
for renewal in future years.

Deadline is 22 February 2024.

VFFF Backing the Future QLD grant round 

VFFF is excited to open applications for their QLD Backing the Future grant round, awarding one-off, $50,000 grants to 10 individuals or groups of individuals who are working to support young people in rural and regional QLD. Over the course of 12 months, grant recipients will research, develop and/or accelerate an early-stage idea aligned to one of VFFF's four focus areas: Caring for the Environment, Contributing to Society, Decent Work or Exploring Christian Faith and Values.

Applications close Monday 4 March 2024.

ACF Boost applications open

ACF Boost is a matched funding program for independent artists and small organisations via the Australian Cultural Fund. Participants will receive $1,000 up-front to support their fundraising activity, then a dollar-for-dollar matched funding boost of up to $5,000.
